DETROIT -- While Jordan Zimmermann's signing this offseason was a boon for the Tigers' rotation, no player stood to benefit more than infielder Andrew Romine. For the past two years, Romine wore No. 27, the jersey number Zimmermann wore his entire career in Washington.
It looked like an easy chance for Romine to pick up some extra money for his wedding or honeymoon earlier this offseason. Instead, not only did Romine give up No. 27 to Zimmermann, he did it without reward.
Romine will now wear 17, a number with some history among Tigers utility players. Shane Halter, who played all nine positions in a game for the Tigers at the end of the 2000 season, wore 17 for four years. Jason Smith wore it in 2005.
