Pirates claim RHP Yoervis Medina

The Pirates have claimed right-handed pitcher Yoervis Medina off waivers from the Chicago Cubs.

The 27-yeard-old Medina began the 2015 season with the Seattle Mariners before being optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on May 3. He was then acquired by the Cubs on May 19 in exchange for catcher Welington Castillo.

Medina also pitched with Triple-A Iowa and spent two stints with the Cubs over the final three months of the season.

He made a total of 32 relief appearances at the Triple-A level and went 1-0 with a 4.17 ERA in 17 Major League games between the Mariners and Cubs.

In 146 big league appearances, Medina has gone 10-9 with a 3.08 ERA (146.0ip/50er) and 147 strikeouts. He made his Major League debut with Seattle 4/16/13.
