Indians add Choice to non-roster invitees list

CLEVELAND -- The Indians have added outfielder Michael Choice to their list of non-roster invitees for Spring Training.

On Monday, Cleveland announced that Choice cleared waivers and has been sent outright to Triple-A Columbus. He joins outfielder Shane Robinson, utility man Michael Martinez, pitcher Joseph Colon and catchers Adam Moore and Anthony Recker on the club's non-roster list.

The 26-year-old Choice, who was acquired from the Rangers in exchange for cash considerations on Aug. 21, was designated for assignment by the Indians on Wednesday after reliever Kirby Yates was acquired from the Rays.

In 124 games between Triple-A Round Rock (Texas) and Triple-A Columbus (Cleveland) last season, Choice hit .239 with 13 home runs, 30 doubles, 58 runs and 67 RBIs. He has hit .188 in 96 career big league games in parts of three seasons with the A's and Rangers. Choice has experience in all three outfield positions, but is primarily a corner outfielder. He has not played center regularly since 2013.

Indians pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training in Goodyear, Ariz., on Feb. 17 with the full squad required to report on Feb. 21.
