The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced the signing of first baseman/outfielder Jake Goebbert. The announcement was made by Executive Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington.
Goebbert, 28, spent the entire 2015 season with El Paso (Padres AAA) and hit .294 (104-for-354) with 20 doubles, 10 home runs, 62 RBI and a .844 OPS in 122 games. He made 40 appearances in left field, 29 at first base, 25 in center field and 21 in right field for the Chihuahuas.
The left-handed hitting Goebbert was originally selected by Houston in the 13th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. After four seasons in the Astros minor league system, he was acquired by Oakland on 4/4/13 and ranked third among Athletics farmhands in home runs (23) and tied for fourth in extra-base hits (50) during the 2013 campaign.
Goebbert was acquired by San Diego on 5/15/14 and made his Major League debut with the Padres on 6/20/14. He appeared in 51 games with San Diego in 2014, making 25 appearances at first base and eight in left field. Goebbert connected off Jair Jurrjens for his first big league home run on 7/9/14 at Colorado.
With the addition of Goebbert, there are now 39 players on Pittsburgh's 40-man roster.
