MIAMI -- How the Marlins' roster will shape up for 2016 remains a work in progress, but they provided some definitive answers regarding Spring Training on Tuesday, announcing workout dates and their Grapefruit League schedule.
Miami's pitchers and catchers will begin workouts Feb. 19 at the Roger Dean Stadium complex in Jupiter, Fla. Full-squad workouts get underway Feb. 22, and the exhibition season opens against the University of Miami on March 1 at home.
Entering their 14th season at Roger Dean Stadium, the Marlins will play 19 games at home. They open Grapefruit League action March 3 against the Cardinals, with whom they share the complex.
Coming off a 71-91 season, the Marlins will be under the leadership of new manager Don Mattingly, formerly with the Dodgers.
Mattingly will have a strong core with which to work, including All-Stars Giancarlo Stanton, Jose Fernandez and Dee Gordon, the 2015 National League batting champion and Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner. Miami's top offseason priority is upgrading its starting pitching.
The Marlins will play a total of 28 Grapefruit League games, with home games in Jupiter against the Cardinals (three games), Mets (three), Nationals (three), Yankees (March 8), Braves (March 10), Tigers (March 19), Red Sox (March 22) and Twins (March 24). The team will close out the Grapefruit League portion of its schedule March 30 against St. Louis.
Opening Day is April 5 at Marlins Park against the Tigers.
Individual tickets for games in Jupiter will go on sale on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 9 a.m. ET at the Roger Dean Stadium ticket office during Fan Fest. For more information, go to marlins.com.
