In the first inning, Ben Zobrist ripped a one-out double to deep center field, moved to third on an infield single by Lorenzo Cain and scored on a fielder's-choice groundout by Eric Hosmer to give his team an early lead.
After Wright connected for a two-run homer in the bottom of the first -- only his eighth hit in 42 postseason at-bats -- the Royals came right back with three consecutive hits off Syndergaard in the top of the second.
Salvador Perez reached on an infield single, Alex Gordon followed with a single to right and Alex Rios followed with an RBI single to left. Gordon was thrown out at third on the play -- a call overturned via replay -- but Rios moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ventura and then scored on a passed ball by Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud, giving the Royals the one-run lead.
