That is the length of the red-carpeted route that more than 60 environment-friendly Chevy Avalanche trucks will take to carry the 2006 All-Stars to PNC Park during the second annual MLB All-Star Game Red Carpet Show presented by Chevrolet.
Major League Baseball started doing this before last year's Midsummer Classic in Detroit, and it started a tradition of going to the game in style.
"The event's terrific. These guys are stars, and that's why we're doing it," said Tim Brosnan, Major League Baseball's executive vice president, business. "These guys are the greatest athletes in the world, and they're getting recognized as such.
"The MLB All-Star Game Red Carpet Show presented by Chevrolet is yet another way Major League Baseball is bringing fans closer to the game. It will give fans the opportunity to see their favorite Major League Baseball stars in a new and unique way as part of the overall All-Star Week experience."
FOX Sports Net will again produce and air the MLB All-Star Game Red Carpet Show presented by Chevrolet nationwide from 7-8 p.m. ET as a lead-in to the live national network broadcast beginning at 8 ET on FOX.
Fans in Pittsburgh and those viewing throughout the country will have an added opportunity to see their favorite All-Stars up close with this unique parade. The time of the actual procession is from 3-4 p.m. ET, and fans can set up along the route anytime after noon. Viewing locations are the Clemente Bridge, Federal Street and General Robinson.
Players, managers and their families will each make their way to the ballpark in brand new 2007 Avalanches, the official ride of this event. All are FlexFuel vehicles and powered by E85, an environmentally-friendly mix of ethanol and gasoline.
The entire route will be covered by a "red carpet," provided by Home Depot. The total length is 1,837 feet, and total square footage of the route is 44,388 feet. It will be laid in two sections: 1,400 by 20 feet from Byum Theater to the end of Clemente Bridge, and 437 by 37 1/2 feet from the Clemente Statue to Federal Street. The carpet was scheduled to begin being installed at 2 a.m. on Tuesday, after the CENTURY 21 Home Run Derby festivities have been cleared out.
Major League sponsors Chevrolet, Baby Ruth, DHL, Frito-Lay, Gillette, MasterCard, Pepsi, The Home Depot and XM Satellite Radio will advertise throughout the broadcast, making MLB sponsors the only entities with commercial time during the program.
For the fourth consecutive year, the outcome of the All-Star Game will determine which league will have home-field advantage in the World Series. In keeping with the All-Star Game theme, "This One Counts," the official World Series Trophy crafted by Tiffany & Company will also be on display as part of the Red Carpet Show. It will be driven in the final car of the parade.
Part of the fun is watching various celebrities turn into chauffeurs for the All-Stars as they take the wheel.
"It's nice," Red Sox slugger David Ortiz said of the new tradition.
The 77th All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports, in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and Sportsnet HD and televised around the world by Major League Baseball International. ESPN Radio will provide exclusive, national radio coverage, while MLB.com will provide extensive online coverage and MLB Radio will provide exclusive play-by-play coverage of the game on the Internet.
