Hoffpauir can play second and third base and is a line-drive hitter who doesn't strike out much. He hit .249 away from Cashman Field in Las Vegas, which is regarded as one of the most hitter-friendly ballparks in the Pacific Coast League.
Hoffpauir, a sixth-round pick of the Cardinals in 2004, hit for the cycle twice in 2010 for Las Vegas. He hit .250 in a 12 at-bat stint with the Cardinals in 2009.
Stewart, 28, signed a Minor League contract with the Padres last December. He appeared in two games defensively in September after hitting .248 with seven home runs and 39 RBIs for Triple-A Portland this season.
