Nolan Arenado Named the National League Player of the Month for September

Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado has been voted Budweiser Presents National League Player of the Month for September. Budweiser, the official beer sponsor of Major League Baseball and sponsor for 24 of 30 MLB clubs, is also the presenting sponsor of the American League Player of the Month Award.

In 28 games last month, Arenado hit .339 (38-for-112), leading the Major Leagues with 11 home runs, 32 RBI and 79 total bases. His 38 hits were tops in the NL last month, while his .705 slugging percentage ranked second. He also tied for the League's sixth-best batting average and was tied for the sixth-most runs scored (19). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Arenado joins former teammate Troy Tulowitzki (15 HR, 40 RBI in 2010) and Matt Holliday (10 HR, 34 RBI in 2006) as the only Colorado players with a double-digit home run total and more than 30 RBI during the month of September.

The California native finished the season with an eight-game hitting streak, going 11-for-29 with three home runs and 13 RBI in that span. On Friday, he powered the Rockies to a 9-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park, hitting his 42nd homer of the season, clubbing his 42nd double and collecting his 128th, 129th and 130th RBI of the season. The 24-year-old ended his breakout season tied with Washington's Bryce Harper for the National League lead in homers (42), while leading all Major Leaguers in RBI (130). In doing so, he became the first Rockies player to lead the NL in home runs since 1997, when Larry Walker clubbed 49, and became the first to lead the Majors in RBI since Andres Galarraga drove in 150 in 1996. The slick-fielding Arenado helped his case for the RBI crown with consecutive multi-RBI performances on September 26th and 27th in victories over the NL West Champion Los Angeles Dodgers. On the 26th, Arenado clubbed a grand slam in the first inning of an eventual 8-6 win, tying his previous career high of four RBI with one swing of the bat. The following day, the Rox' second round selection in the 2009 MLB Draft, eclipsed that mark by driving in five en route to a 12-5 victory over the Dodgers. Arenado finished the season with 89 extra-base hits, marking the most by an NL third baseman in Major League history, and surpassing Chipper Jones' mark of 87 set in 1999. This is his first career Player of the Month honor.

Other players receiving votes were Harper (.341, 25 R, 30 H, 10 HR, 19 RBI, .761 SLG, .483 OBP); Chicago's Starlin Castro (.426, 14 R, 29 H, 5 HR, 20 RBI, .750 SLG, .452 OBP); and New York's Yoenis Cespedes (.301, 19 R, 31 H, 9 HR, 21 RBI, .689 SLG).

The Budweiser Presents National League Player of the Month for September 2015, Nolan Arenado, will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, in recognition of his accomplishment.
