Blair to undergo surgery on left knee

OAKLAND -- A's catcher Carson Blair will undergo season-ending left knee surgery after an MRI revealed a medial meniscus tear.

Manager Bob Melvin said Blair felt discomfort in the knee ahead of Thursday's game but managed to play before experiencing increased pain and swelling. He underwent an MRI the next day and will have surgery at a date to be determined.

Melvin is unsure of an expected recovery time.

That leaves Stephen Vogt and Bryan Anderson as the only healthy catchers on the A's roster, with Josh Phegley also down with concussion symptoms.

Worth noting

• Right-hander Sonny Gray experienced hip soreness during his six-inning outing against the Giants on Friday night and Melvin said Saturday, "We'll give it some time and see how he feels in the next couple of days before we make a decision on whether he starts or not."
