Blue Jays announce 2015 Webster Award winners

The TORONTO BLUE JAYS are pleased to announce the following players have been selected as this year's recipients of the R. HOWARD WEBSTER AWARDS, recognizing the most valuable players at each of the Club's minor league affiliated teams: 3B/1B MATT HAGUE (AAA), UTL RYAN SCHIMPF (AA), RHP WIL BROWNING (High-A), 1B RYAN McBROOM (Low-A), C RYAN HISSEY (Short-Season), OF RODRIGO OROZCO (Rookie Advanced), RHP JUSTIN MAESE (Rookie) and OF NORBERTO OBESO (DSL).

The eight selections for this season's WEBSTER AWARDS are all first time winners.

Buffalo Bisons, International League (AAA): Matt Hague
Bats: Right; Throws: Right; Age: 30; Born: Bellevue, WA

3B Matt Hague…Spent most of 2015 with Buffalo earning International League Most Valuable Player. Hague, who also was also named the IL's Post Season All-Star at third base, becomes the ninth Bisons player to be named IL MVP in the league's 132-year history. In 129 games, Hague hit .338 with 33 doubles, 11 home runs, 92 RBI, a .416 on-base percentage and a .468 slugging percentage. The hits, average, on-base percentage and slugging all led the International League.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Eastern League (AA): Ryan Schimpf
Bats: Left; Throws: Right; Age: 27; Born: Covington, LA

UTL Ryan Schimpf…Picked up his 1st Webster Award in his 7th professional season. Schimpf spent the majority of 2015 with New Hampshire, appearing in 76 games, posting a .271 average with 20 doubles, 20 home runs, 56 RBI and 42 walks. The left-handed hitter led the Fisher Cats in home runs, slugging pct. (.581) and OPS (.959). In addition the 20 home runs ranked T1st in the Eastern League, while his SLG and OPS ranked 3rd, despite playing in only 76 games.

Dunedin Blue Jays, Florida State League (High-A): Wil Browning
Throws: Right; Age: 27; Born: Sallis, MS

RHP Wil Browning…Posted a 2-1 record with a 0.78 ERA and 22 saves in 31 appearances for Dunedin before being promoted to New Hampshire. The 22 saves led the Florida State League and allowed runs in just two of his 31 appearances. The 6-3, 190 pound RHP walked only two batters while fanning 40 in 34.2 innings. In his four seasons of professional ball, Browning has struck out 234 in 189 innings.

Lansing Lugnuts, Midwest League (Low-A): Ryan McBroom
Bats: Right; Throws: Left Age: 23; Born: Fredericksburg, VA

1B Ryan McBroom… In his first full season of professional ball McBroom posted a .315 average with 39 doubles, 12 home runs and 90 RBI. The right-handed hitter was among the Midwest League leaders in many categories, including 1st in doubles (39), OBP (.387) and XBH (52), 2nd in average (.315), RBI (90), SLG (.482) and 4th in hits (145). The stellar season earned McBroom Midwest League MVP honours as well as a post-season All-Star selection.

Vancouver Canadians, Northwest League (Short-Season): Ryan Hissey
Bats: Left; Throws: Right Age: 21; Born: Phoenixville, PA

C Ryan Hissey…The Blue Jays 14th round pick in this past June draft, Hissey began the season with the GCL squad batting .355 in 10 games before a promotion to Vancouver. The left-handed hitter put up a respectable .269 average with 11 doubles, one triple, one home run and 16 RBI over 43 contests for the Canadians, including a team leading .363 OBP. The 6-0, 190 pound catcher was solid behind the plate throwing out 17 of 56 (30%) potential base stealers.

Bluefield Blue Jays, Appalachian League (Rookie Advanced): Rodrigo Orozco
Bats: Switch; Throws: Right; Age: 20; Born: Panama City, Panama

OF Rodrigo Orozco…Was the top hitter on the Bluefield club leading the team in OBP (.368), SLG (.435) & OPS (.803). The 20 year-old posted a 17-game hitting streak from June 28-July 20 while recording 22 multi-hit efforts.

Gulf Coast Blue Jays, Gulf Coast League (Rookie): Justin Maese
Throws: Right; Age: 18; Born: El Paso, TX

RHP Justin Maese… The Blue Jays 3rd round selection in this past June draft, Maese dominated Gulf Coast League hitters in his eight appearances (four starts) going 5-0 with a 1.01 ERA. The 18 year-old did not allow more than one run in any of his eight outings, while posting 5+ IP in each of his last six appearances. Maese capped off his season with a 10 strikeout, one earned run, four hit performance over six innings to lead the GCL Blue Jays to a 7-1 win over the Tigers in semi-final action.

DSL Blue Jays, Dominican Summer League: Norberto Obeso
Bats: Left; Throws: Right Age: 20; Born: Hermosillo, Mexico

OF Norberto Obeso…Named the 2015 Webster Award winner for the DSL Blue Jays. Obeso finished 4th in DSL batting with a .351 average on the strength of a league leading 92 hits. The left-handed hitter also recorded 58 walks and a .490 OBP to rank 2nd in the DSL.
