CHICAGO -- A's outfielder Billy Burns and catcher Stephen Vogt are making significant progress, but manager Bob Melvin doesn't expect either to play in the White Sox series that concludes Thursday.
Burns, who has missed six consecutive games with tightness in his right hamstring, engaged in a full range of baseball activity on Wednesday. Vogt was also seen on the field during pregame action, taking batting practice for the first time since Sept. 6, when he took a foul tip to his groin.
That's a significant step for Vogt, who is still likely to return to the lineup as a designated hitter before resuming catching duties. There's no return set for Vogt, but Melvin said Burns could potentially be back in the lineup sometime this weekend in Houston.
"This series is in doubt," Melvin said, "but hopefully we see [Burns] in the next series. I don't want to get ahead of myself, though, because we do want to be careful with him."
Elsewhere, third baseman Danny Valencia remained out of the lineup a second straight day Wednesday with lat muscle soreness, though Melvin noted, "He's a lot better today."
