2015 All-Star does charity work with Jimmy Fund

Holt is Red Sox's Clemente Award nominee

BALTIMORE -- Brock Holt was named an All-Star earlier this season for his on-field contributions. The super-utility man was recognized Monday for his tireless work off the field.

Holt was named this year's Red Sox nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet.

The award is given annually to a player who best represents the game through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement. Each club nominates one player in an effort to pay tribute to Clemente's achievements and character by recognizing current players who truly understand the value of helping others.

In Spring Training, Holt and teammate Pablo Sandoval were named the Red Sox co-captains of the Jimmy Fund.

"I learned about the Jimmy Fund last year, when I got here and established myself," said Holt. "When you play for the Red Sox, you just start seeing the Jimmy Fund around a lot. You start to wonder: What is it, and what is so special about it? And then I was able to take a visit there, and the first time I went there, it opened my eyes a lot to what they do and how important it is for us to kind of being involved in it. It's so close to Fenway."

The charity work Holt has done gives him increased perspective.

"As baseball players, we want to come to the field every day and do our best and play as good as we can possibly play and win every game," said Holt. "But at the end of the day, winning a baseball game isn't what's most important, or getting three hits. There's so many other things in life that are a whole lot more meaningful."

Wednesday marks the 14th annual Roberto Clemente Day, which was established by MLB to honor Clemente's legacy and to officially acknowledge local club nominees of the award in his honor. The 12-time All-Star and Pirates Hall of Famer died in a plane crash on Dec. 31, 1972, while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Beginning Wednesday, fans can participate in selecting the winner of the Roberto Clemente Award by visiting ChevyBaseball.com, powered by MLB Advanced Media, to vote for Holt. Voting ends on Friday, Oct. 9, and participating fans will be automatically registered for a chance to win a trip to the 2015 World Series, where the winner of the Roberto Clemente Award will be announced.
