Gordon among nominees for Clemente Award

CLEVELAND -- Royals outfielder Alex Gordon is this year's nominee for the 2015 Roberto Clemente award, which recognizes the player who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field.

Each Major League club nominates one player for the award. Jimmy Rollins and Paul Konerko won the honors last season.

Beginning on Roberto Clemente Day, which is Wednesday, fans are encouraged to participate in the process of selecting the winner of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet by visiting ChevyBaseball.com, which is powered by MLB Advanced Media, to vote for one of the 30 nominees. Voting ends on Friday, Oct. 9, and participating fans will be automatically registered for a chance to win a trip to the 2015 World Series, where the winner of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet will be announced.

Gordon was thrilled to be nominated.

"It means a lot to me," Gordon said. "A lot of guys could be nominated and to be singled out is a great honor. It's nice to be recognized in that way."

Royals manager Ned Yost said Gordon was the right choice.

"As much of a quality ballplayer that he is," Yost said, "he's an even more quality individual."
