Baldelli up, Gathright down

ST. PETERSBURG -- Outfielder Joey Gathright was optioned to Triple-A Durham after Tuesday's game to make room on the roster for Rocco Baldelli, who is returning from his rehab stint in Durham.

Rays manager Joe Maddon said barring any complications with travel plans and arrival times, Baldelli will be in Wednesday's lineup against the Angels.

Baldelli has yet to appear in a game this season for the Rays. Most recently, he's been nursing a strained hamstring.

Gathright has appeared in 151 games for Tampa Bay over the last three seasons. He hit .201 for the Rays in 55 games this year (31-for-154), with six doubles, 13 RBIs, 20 walks and 12 stolen bases.

Gathright appeared resigned to his fate, if not a little crestfallen.

"I had two months here to do what I needed to do, and I didn't perform my best here so you kind of expect these things," he said. "I knew Rocco was coming back. I knew it was either me or some other people. I'm not disappointed; I kind of expected it."
