He has hit right-handed and left-handed during batting practice, and seems to have made some progress. But Phillies manager Charlie Manuel did not sound as if he believed Rollins, who has not run at full speed, would be back in the lineup Sunday.
Rollins said earlier in the week he probably would be the first player off the bench if the team needed a pinch-hitter in the second or third inning or the last player off the bench because of the uncertainty surrounding his ability to run.
"I think when it comes time to hit him and when or where, I think the game will dictate that to me," Manuel said. "Also, the pitcher. If we've got guys sitting on the bench that match up against the pitcher, more than likely they will probably hit against them. But at the same time, if Jimmy can swing the bat, he's definitely capable of getting a game-winning hit for you."
