Third baseman Kris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs has been voted the National League Rookie of the Month for August.
In 28 games last month, Bryant hit .330 (33-for-100), good for third among NL rookies, while his seven homers and 20 RBI both were tied for second behind teammate Kyle Schwarber. Bryant had the League's highest rookie slugging percentage (.620), while his .422 on-base percentage and 62 total bases were tops among all Major League rookies. He also ranked among League rookie leaders in runs scored (3rd, 19) and hits (4th).
On Sunday, August 30th, Bryant's two-run homer in the first inning proved to be the difference in starter Jake Arrieta's 2-0, no-hit victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 23-year-old Bryant currently ranks first among all Major League rookies and leads his team with 12 game-winning RBI and 22 go-ahead RBI this season. Bryant clubbed a walk-off blast in the bottom of the ninth inning on August 24th to give the Cubs a 2-1 win over the visiting Cleveland Indians. The long ball was his second career walk-off homer. He notched his first career four-hit performance in a losing effort on August 19th against the Detroit Tigers at Wrigley Field, going 4-for-4 with a walk, a home run and a triple. The Cubs' first round selection (second overall) in the 2013 MLB Draft currently leads all Major League rookies with 82 RBI on the season, while his 22 home runs rank second. This is his second career monthly award, having also been voted NL Rookie of the Month for May.
Other rookies receiving votes included Stephen Piscotty (.333, 16 R, 35 H, 8 2B, 4 HR, 20 RBI, .581 SLG) of the St. Louis Cardinals; Philadelphia's Cameron Rupp (.310, 9 R, 18 H, 7 HR, 17 RBI, .707 SLG) and Aaron Nola (4-0, 3.25 ERA, 28 SO, 36.0 IP); Cincinnati's Raisel Iglesias (2-3, 2.27 ERA, 45 SO, 39.2 IP); and Pittsburgh's Arquimedes Caminero (3-0, 0.00 ERA, 15.0 IP, 16 SO).
