KANSAS CITY, Mo. (September 1, 2015) - The Kansas City Royals announced today that infielder/outfielder Ben Zobrist has been named the Royals Majestic Player of the Month for August, while right-handed pitcher Yordano Ventura has been named the club's Pitcher of the Month. The player award is determined by a combined fan and media vote, with the pitcher award voted on by local media.
Zobrist was traded to the Royals on July 28 and made a splash right away. Among American League hitters, he ranked second in walks (17) in August as well as sixth in hits (35), eighth in on-base percentage (.433), tied for 12th in doubles (8) and 15th in batting average (.343). He became the first Royal to homer from both sides of the plate in five seasons on August 1, doing it at Rogers Centre in a 7-6 win over the Blue Jays. He also hit a game-tying homer in the ninth inning off Aroldis Chapman in an August 18 win over the Reds.
Ventura put together his best month of the season, going 4-0 with a 3.41 ERA in six August starts. His four wins tied for second in the A.L., while he also tied for sixth in strikeouts (37). He also had the 13th-lowest opponents' batting average (.210) in the league during the month of August. 'Ace' had two outings, August 11 vs. Detroit and August 27 vs. Baltimore, where he did not allow a run pitching 6.0 innings in both starts. He recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts in his August 27 start against the O's, the most by a Royals pitcher since April, 2014.
