Chafin optioned to Reno to give arm a rest

'He's been so good in every role,' Hale says of D-backs reliever

Chafin optioned to Reno to give arm a rest

PHOENIX -- D-backs manager Chip Hale told Andrew Chafin that the reliever has been "one of the brightest surprises on the team this year," on Sunday morning.

Chafin will be a "key cog" in Hale's vision of a championship team in the future, the manager explained.

Then the club optioned Chafin to Triple-A Reno for his own good.

"He's little tired, but that's to be expected," Hale said. "Sometimes, we have to make these moves to save him from us. He's been so good in every role, whether it was long or left-handed setup, going multiple innings in the late parts of the games and I would not be afraid to use him as a closer if we needed to. He just needs the time off and we have to be vigilant about taking care of our arms."

Chafin gets out of trouble

Along with Chafin, the D-backs recalled right-handed pitchers Allen Webster and A.J. Schugel from Triple-A Reno, and selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Silvino Bracho from Double-A Mobile on Sunday.

Bracho pitched a scoreless inning in the 7-4 loss to the A's, getting one strikeout while allowing one hit and one walk.

Chafin, 25, went 5-1 with two saves and a 2.41 ERA in 67 1/3 innings pitched during 55 relief appearanc.es for the D-backs this season. He is expected to return to the big leagues when Reno's season concludes on Sept. 7.

"Nobody is ever happy about being sent down," Chafin said, "but the way I see it, it is best for me right now and it is best for the team right now. They don't want to push me too hard, and if I'm up here and not able to pitch, it doesn't do the team any good."

Schugel, 26, combined to go 9-9 with a 4.84 ERA in 21 starts at Mobile and Reno. He's 5-4 with a 3.02 ERA in his last 11 starts. He pitched three innings of relief on April 12 against the Dodgers.

Bracho, 23, went 2-1 with 19 saves and a 1.60 ERA with 10 walks and 73 strikeouts in 42 games with Single-A Visalia and Mobile this season.
