Cosart among injured Marlins hurlers on mend

WASHINGTON -- Pitching depth is close to becoming a reality for the Marlins again, as the club is expected to receive some reinforcements after rosters expand on Tuesday.

Miami has several pitchers on the disabled list who are getting close to rejoining the roster. Jarred Cosart (left inner ear disorder) is scheduled to make a rehab start for Class A Advanced Jupiter on Tuesday, and Jose Urena (left knee contusion) is scheduled to throw two innings for Jupiter on Monday.

Urena has thrown live batting practice, and is ready for a rehab outing.

One thing that may sidetrack some pitchers is the weather. Storms are sweeping through South Florida, and they may disrupt some throwing schedules at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla.

Cosart is slated to throw 75-80 pitches on Tuesday for the Hammerheads. If that goes without a hitch, he could be back with the Marlins around Sept. 8-9.

The Marlins currently have five starters on the disabled list -- Jose Fernandez (right biceps strain), Henderson Alvarez (shoulder surgery), Kendry Flores (right shoulder tendinitis), Cosart and Urena.

Alvarez is out for the season.

Also, reliever Carter Capps (right elbow strain) continues to progress. The club is confident the hard-throwing right-hander is fine, but they are being extra cautious, so there is no firm timeline for his return.

The best case for Fernandez is returning in the middle of September.

Flores has been throwing, and is progressing on schedule.
