Mariners recall catcher John Hicks from AAA Tacoma

Catcher Mike Zunino optioned to AAA Tacoma

CHICAGO, Illinois. - Seattle Mariners Assistant General Manager Jeff Kingston announced the following roster moves prior to tonight's game at the Chicago White Sox:

  • John Hicks, C, recalled from AAA Tacoma
  • Mike Zunino, C, optioned to AAA Tacoma

Hicks (#6) will be available for tonight's game in Chicago against the White Sox.

Hicks, 25, will be making his Major League debut. In 83 games with AAA Tacoma, he hit .245 (73x298) with 39 runs, 15 doubles, 1 triple, 6 home runs and 35 RBI. He appeared in 67 games behind the plate with the Rainiers, 11 at first base and had one appearance in the outfield. In parts of five minor league seasons, he has combined to hit .280 (428x1529) with 229 runs, 82 doubles, 9 triples, 32 home runs and 216 RBI.

Hicks was drafted by the Mariners in the 4th round of the 2011 June Amateur Draft out of the University of Virginia.

Zunino, 24, was hitting .174 (61x350) with 28 runs, 11 doubles, 11 home runs and 28 RBI in 112 games with Seattle. In parts of three seasons with the Mariners, he is hitting .193 (185x961) with 101 runs, 36 doubles, 2 triples, 38 home runs, 102 RBI in 295 games. He was the Mariners 1st round pick in the 2012 June Amateur Draft out of the University of Florida.
