Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced today that the club has recalled left-handed pitcher Rob Rasmussen from AAA Tacoma. Left-handed pitcher Joe Beimel has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 20, with posterior inflammation in his left shoulder.
Rasmussen, 26, tossed 1.0 scoreless in his lone appearance with AAA Tacoma after being optioned on Monday. He is 2-1, 16.20 in 8 games with the Mariners (12 ER, 6.2 IP). In 9 MLB games this season, he has 5 shutout appearances (2-0, 0.00 in 5.2 IP) but has allowed 12 ER in 2.0 IP (0-1, 54.00) in the other 4 games. Rasmussen was acquired by Seattle from Toronto (along with RHP Jose Ramirez) in exchange for RHP Mark Lowe on July 31, 2015.
Beimel, 38, was 2-1 with 1 save and a 4.78 ERA (20 ER, 37.2 IP) with 19 strikeouts in 42 relief appearances with Seattle. He was 2-1-1, 2.50 (10 ER, 36.0 IP) in his first 37 appearances this season, but has allowed runs in his last five consecutive games (combined 1.2 IP, 8 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 5 HR, 3 BB, 1 HB, 0 SO) to nearly double his ERA. In all, 27 of his first 37 outings were scoreless. With AAA Tacoma he was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER, 3.2 IP) with 5 strikeouts in 3 appearances. He signed a minor league contract with Seattle on April 2 and began the season in extended spring training before joining the Rainiers.
