Red Cross collection for western wildfires at Friday's game

Moment of silence pregame for firefighters killed near Twisp

Volunteers for the American Red Cross will be outside the gates of Safeco Field on Friday before the Seattle Mariners take on the Chicago White Sox collecting donations for those affected by the Western wildfires.

There will also be a moment of silence prior to the game in remembrance of three U.S. Forest Service firefighters who were killed Wednesday afternoon near Twisp. Four others were hurt.

This has been one of the warmest and driest summers in recent memory in the state. There are currently at least 18 large fires raging across North Central Washington. Thousands of people have been evacuated and more than 50 homes have been destroyed. The Red Cross is operating six evacuation shelters in five counties where people can get food, water, showers, emergency supplies and health services.

Volunteers will be outside Safeco Field on Friday beginning at 5pm. The Mariners non-profit foundation, Mariners Care, will match all donations collected that night.

You can also text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 to disaster relief (the charge will appear on your phone bill), give online at RedCross.org, or call 1-800-RED-CROSS (733-2767).
