On Wednesday, August 19, JAYS CARE FOUNDATION, in partnership with TORONTO COMMUNITY HOUSING CORPORATION, will celebrate the conclusion of the 27th season of Rookie League in Toronto at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. Over 1,200 Rookie League participants will enjoy a day of baseball activities on the athletic fields.
Rookie League is a program that uses the game of baseball as a platform to teach children team work, cooperation, resiliency and self-esteem. Jays Care provides baseball equipment, T-shirts, hats and baseball resources, as well as sustainable grants to each community. In 2015, Rookie League in Toronto celebrated its 27th season with a seven-week program that continued to break barriers to organized sport for more than 1,200 children and youth from 50 Toronto Community Housing neighbourhoods and provided employment for 180 youth, the majority of whom are Toronto Community Housing residents.
Toronto Blue Jays alumni Roberto Alomar, Jesse Barfield, Homer Bush, Brian McRae, Lloyd Moseby, Tanyon Sturtze, Duane Ward and Devon White served as Honorary Managers, and 2015 Toronto Blue Jays Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion, Drew Hutchison, Russell Martin, Kevin Pillar, Aaron Sanchez and Marcus Stroman served as Honorary Captains.
To celebrate the conclusion of the Rookie League season, all participants will receive a Blue Jays backpack filled with school supplies to set them up for success in the upcoming school year.
