Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates named National League Player of the Week

Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates has been named National League Player of the Week for the week of August 3rd-9th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

McCutchen led qualifying Major League hitters with a .563 batting average, a 1.063 slugging percentage, and a .652 on-base percentage last week, while tying for fifth with eight RBI. The five-time NL All-Star had seven runs scored for the week, which was tied for second among NL hitters. McCutchen homered and drove in four during Sunday night's series finale with the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers. The 28-year-old slugger's two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning helped the Pirates scratch their way back into the contest after falling behind, 5-1, early in the game. McCutchen also added a two-run single during Pittsburgh's nine-run outburst in the seventh inning of the eventual 13-6 victory. It was McCutchen's third consecutive multi-hit game after going 3-for-3 and 2-for-3 in both Saturday and Friday's matchups at PNC Park, respectively. Saturday's performance included his 1,100th career base-hit as he became the 29th player in team history to reach the threshold. McCutchen currently ranks fifth in the NL with a .398 on-base percentage on the season. This is his sixth career weekly award, having won most recently for the week ending May 24th of this year.

Other noteworthy performances last week included Matt Carpenter of the St. Louis Cardinals (.348, 7 R, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 1.000 SLG, .423 OBP); Milwaukee's Khris Davis (.320, 5 R, 8 H, 4 HR, 12 RBI, .840 SLG); Atlanta's Nick Markakis (.406, 13 H, 9 RBI, .394 OBP); Chicago Cubs rookie Kyle Schwarber (.368, 8 R, 7 H, 2 HR, 8 RBI, .789 SLG) and Jake Arrieta (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 11 SO, 14.2 IP); and Washington's Ryan (.429, 9 H, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 1.000 SLG).
