D-backs acquired LHP Junior Garcia from Astros for LHP Oliver Perez, will select LHP Keith Hessler from Triple-A Reno on Saturday

PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) acquired left-handed pitcher Junior Garcia from the Houston Astros for left-handed pitcher Oliver Pérez and tomorrow will select left-handed pitcher Keith Hessler from Triple-A Reno, as announced by D-backs Sr. Vice President & General Manager Dave Stewart.

Garcia, 19, is 3-1 with a 0.96 ERA (4 ER in 37.1 IP), .201 opponents average and 26 strikeouts in a combined 9 games (6 starts) between Short-Season A Tri-City and Rookie-Advanced Greeneville. He opened the season at Greeneville and in his first 3 games, allowed 1 unearned run in 11.1 innings. Over his first 6 games (4 starts), he allowed 3 runs (1 earned) in 24.1 innings. In his 2 most recent outings (1 start), with Tri-City, he has 8.0 scoreless innings.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound has played 3 Minor Leagues seasons in the Astros system since signing as a non-drafted free agent on Oct. 17, 2012. In 36 career games (15 starts), he is 5-4 with a 2.20 ERA (38 ER in 114.2 IP), .233 opponents average and 84 strikeouts. Garcia is a native of Jima Abajo, Dominican Republic.

Hessler, 26, is getting his first stint in the Major Leagues. This season he is a combined 4-2 with a 1.68 ERA (10 ER in 53.2 IP), .197 opponents average, 62 strikeouts (11 walks) and a 10.4 strikeouts-per-9.0-innings ratio in 47 games between Triple-A Reno, Double-A Mobile and Single-A Advanced Visalia.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder has played 5 Minor League seasons in the D-backs system, and in 180 career games (35 starts), he is 22-16 with a 4.07 ERA (175 ER in 386.2 IP). He signed with the D-backs as a non-drafted free agent on June 9, 2011. He was initially selected by the D-backs in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft (28th round) but did not sign.

Pérez, 33, was the ninth Mexican-born player to play for the D-backs and ranks third on the all-time Mexican-born strikeout list (1,337). In 2 seasons for the D-backs, he went 5-5 with a 2.98 ERA (29 ER in 87.2 IP), .225 opponents average and 113 strikeouts. In 2014, he set the club record for left-handed relievers with 76 strikeouts.
