Perez tries to even up series for Bucs

PITTSBURGH -- Pirates starter Oliver Perez will have an opportunity to put a few bad memories behind him Tuesday when the Bucs host the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park.

It was after a frustrating start against the Cardinals last June that Perez infamously kicked a laundry cart in the visiting clubhouse at Busch Stadium. The incident resulted in Perez breaking his left big toe and spending the subsequent two months on the disabled list. In his next outing against St. Louis at Busch Stadium on Sept. 14, Perez was ejected from the game in the second inning after beaning Cardinals infielder Hector Luna.

In all, Perez has gone 1-3 with a 4.84 ERA in eight career starts against St. Louis. His lone win came in 2003 while he was still a member of the San Diego Padres.

More

Perez's struggles against the National League as a whole have continued this season. Since registering nine strikeouts and limiting the Milwaukee Brewers to one run in 5 1/3 innings on Opening Day, Perez has allowed 14 runs (11 earned) on 15 hits and nine walks in just eight combined innings during consecutive losses against the Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers.

"I think Oliver Perez has to realize that he has to help settle the waters," Pirates manager Jim Tracy said after Perez's last start. "I'm not looking for perfection. You don't expect that. Just keep us in the game. Keep us around."

The Pirates have gone 10-31 against the Cardinals all-time at PNC Park.

Pitching matchup
PIT: LHP Oliver Perez (0-2, 8.10 ERA)
Perez has not won at home since defeating the Washington Nationals, 11-4, on June 21, 2005.

STL: RHP Jeff Suppan (0-1, 4.09 ERA)
The former Pirate has gone 8-3 with a 2.57 ERA in 15 career starts at PNC Park

Player to watch
Albert Pujols probably wishes that the Cardinals would make more trips to the Steel City each summer. In 168 career at-bats at PNC Park, the Cardinals superstar has batted .387 with 17 home runs and 48 RBIs.
