The Miami Marlins today acquired Minor League right-handed starting pitcher Ivan Pineyro and shortstop Elliot Soto from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for RHP Dan Haren and cash considerations. The announcement was made by Marlins' President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill.
Pineyro, 23, has gone 7-5, 3.69 in 19 starts for Tennessee in 2015. His seven wins are currently tied for fifth-most in the Southern League and his 92 strikeouts are tied for seventh-most. Pineyro, who was originally signed by the Washington Nationals out of the Dominican Republic in 2010, made his pro debut in 2011 and owns a Minor League mark of 23-23, 3.67 in 85 games, all starts. He was acquired by the Cubs in an in-season trade in 2013.
Soto, 25, has spent the 2015 season with Double-A Tennessee, hitting .275 (84x306) in 88 games with a .388 on-base percentage. He was the 15th-round draft pick by the Cubs out of Creighton University in 2010. Soto was born in Elgin, IL.
Both Pineyro and Soto will be assigned to Double-A Jacksonville.
