Leathersich, 25, posted a 2.31 ERA this season in 17 appearances, split between two stints with the Mets. The team optioned him to Triple-A Las Vegas on June 28, and he gave up six runs in two innings one day later, throwing 57 pitches. Leathersich did not appear in another game, instead undergoing multiple examinations to determine the source of his arm discomfort.
Famous for his elite strikeout rates in the Minors, Leathersich whiffed 15.2 batters per nine innings over five Minor League seasons. He was the Mets' fifth-round Draft pick in 2011.
