All proceeds from this year's auction will go to Pirates Charities and three non-profit organizations that support ALS patients and their families, and are committed to finding a cure for the disease.
ALS is a neurological disorder characterized by progressive degeneration of motor neuron cells in the spinal cord and brain. Life expectancy for those diagnosed with ALS is normally three to five years. Most people know the disease as "Lou Gehrig's Disease" named after the baseball legend who died from the disease in 1941.
The three organizations that will be supported by the 2015 "Pirates Charities on ROOT SPORTS Auction" are the ALS Certified Center of Excellence at AHN (Allegheny Health Network), The ALS Association/Western Pennsylvania Chapter, and LiveLikeLou.org.
This year, in addition to the opportunity to purchase VIP and VIP PLUS bags, fans will be able to purchase a spot in the Pirates Team Ice Bucket Challenge-- a once-in-a-lifetime event to take place immediately following the Pirates game on Sunday, August 30. There are only 26 available spots (25 Pirates players, plus Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle) for a donation of $2,000 per spot. Each package includes a VIP PLUS bag and the chance to have a Pirates player or Clint Hurdle douse you with a bucket of ice water during the Pirates Team Ice Bucket Challenge at PNC Park.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is a viral video phenomenon that started in August 2014. A person dumps a bucket of ice and water over his or her head, and then challenges friends to either do the same, donate to an ALS charity, or both. With August being ALS Awareness Month, the challenge will again be launched this August through the efforts of the co-founders of the challenge and 15 ALS organizations around the world.
- This Pirates Team Ice Bucket Challenge (IBC) experience includes:
- Two tickets to the August 30 game as the Pirates host the Colorado Rockies at 1:35 p.m.
- A pregame picnic
- One spot in the Pirates Team IBC, which will take place immediately following the August 30 game on the field at PNC Park. You will line up with 25 other participants and a Pirates player or Manager Clint Hurdle, and they will dump a bucket of ice water on you.
- A commemorative bucket that will be autographed by the player who "dumps" you.
- A commemorative photo/DVD of the IBC experience.
Again this year, fans will also have the opportunity to purchase VIP and VIP PLUS Bags for a donation of $175 and $550 respectively. The Pirates Charities/ROOT SPORTS bags will include a baseball autographed by a current Pirates player, a baseball autographed by a Pirates alumni, an exclusive specially designed Pirates Ice Bucket Challenge tee, a ticket voucher good for 2 tickets to for a Pirates baseball game, a Pirates 1971 throwback cap and a commemorative Pirates glass set (contains four glasses). Select bags will also randomly include vouchers for a variety of premium items including an Andrew McCutchen autographed jersey, a Francisco Cervelli autographed bat, a certificate for two Dick's Sporting Goods Diamondback bicycles, and more.
The VIP PLUS Bags are available for a $550 donation that includes everything in a regular VIP Bag, PLUS an authentic Pirates home white or black alternate game jersey autographed by their favorite player!
The VIP, VIP PLUS Bags, and the Pirates Team IBC spots can be purchased throughout the night, beginning at 5:30 p.m., in person at the Rivertowne Brewing Hall of Fame Club (for fans in attendance), online at pirates.com/rootsportsauction or by calling (412) 325-4888, while supplies last.
