Red Sox select infielder Jemile Weeks to active Major League roster

Option right-handed pitcher Noe Ramirez to Triple-A Pawtucket

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today selected infielder Jemile Weeks to the active major league roster from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Noe Ramirez was optioned to Pawtucket following yesterday's game. Weeks will be active and wearing No. 30 for tonight's series finale against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park 8:08 p.m.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Weeks, 28, joins the Red Sox for his first major league stint of the season. At Pawtucket this year, the switch-hitter has batted .207 (36-for-174) with 11 doubles, two triples, one home run, five RBI, and 20 runs scored. Defensively, he has appeared at four different positions for the PawSox, second base (28 games), shortstop (16 games), third base (four games), and left field (one game). Weeks also appeared for Short-A Lowell at the end of June, going 2-for-7 in two contests, one at shortstop and one as designated hitter. For his major league career, Weeks has appeared in 240 games between the Oakland Athletics (2011-13), Baltimore Orioles (2014), and Red Sox (2014), batting .260 (233-for-896) with 44 doubles, 17 triples, four home runs, 59 RBI, 115 runs scored, and 40 stolen bases. In his 14 games for Boston last season, he hit .306 (8-for-26) with three doubles and three RBI and appeared at second base and shortstop.

Over his two stints with the Red Sox this year, Ramirez, 25, has appeared in three games, going 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA (3 ER/5.0 IP) with two strikeouts. The right-hander, who made his big league debut with Boston this year, appeared in yesterday's game against the Tigers, allowing one run over 1.2 innings of relief. He will rejoin Pawtucket where he has gone 4-0 with a 2.15 ERA (7 ER/29.1 IP) and 27 strikeouts in 18 games (one start). As a reliever with the PawSox, Ramirez posted a 1.37 ERA (4 ER/26.1 IP) in 17 relief appearances. Signed by the Red Sox as a fourth-round selection in the 2011 June Draft, Ramirez is 11-10 with a 2.88 ERA (82 ER/256.2 IP) and 240 strikeouts in 112 career minor league outings (17 starts).

With the transaction, the Red Sox 40-man roster is full.
