Roundup: Clubs make final roster moves

|
As Opening Day dawns, Major League teams juggled their rosters in order to get to the 25-man limit. Here's a roundup of Sunday's activity:

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Brewers set final roster: The Brewers formally purchased the contract of outfielder Jared Fernandez on Sunday to set its 25-man roster for Opening Day. The team also returned Mark Johnson and Vinny Rottino to Minor League camp.

Martinez edges Robles to make Dodgers roster: Manager Grady Little chose Ramon Martinez over fellow infielder Oscar Robles as the final piece of the Opening Day 25-man roster. Both Robles and catcher Russell Martin were optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Mets make more changes: The Mets made a roster move in time for Monday's season opener, purchasing the contract of left-hander Darren Oliver from Triple-A Norfolk and re-assigning left-handed reliever Pedro Feliciano to Minor League camp. Feliciano had been told he would be on the Major League roster, but concerns about Victor Zambrano's hamstring injury prompted the switch.

Perez released by Phillies: The Phillies released veteran infielder Tomas Perez, who had been with the organization since 1999, on Sunday. The team also assigned infielder Chris Coste, right-handers Clay Condrey, Jeremy Cummings, Travis Minix, Brian Sanches and catcher Dusty Wathan to Triple-A and outfielder Peter Bergeron to Double-A Reading.

Rockies place Kim, Torrealba on DL: The Rockies placed pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim (strained right hamstring) and catcher Yorvit Torrealba (right shoulder strain) on the 15-day disabled list. The team also purchased the contracts of pitcher Tom Martin, catcher Miguel Ojeda and infielder Jason Smith from Triple-A Colorado Springs and designated pitchers Jaime Cerda and Mike Esposito for assignment.

AMERICAN LEAUGE

Jones lands on DL: The Tigers placed closer Todd Jones on the 15-day disabled list with a pulled hamstring suffered in Saturday's Spring Training finale against the Devil Rays. To take his spot on the roster, the club will recall Jordan Tata from Double-A Erie.

Sierra sent down: The Twins officially set their 25-man roster when they completed their final move by assigning Ruben Sierra to Minor League camp.
