Cubs drop Vegas opener to Padres

Padres at the plate: Vinny Castilla blasted a long three-run homer in the first inning, the first of four San Diego home runs. Doug Mirabelli, Ben Johnson and Mark Bellhorn also connected for the Padres.

Cubs at the plate: Derrek Lee had a two-run single and Juan Pierre also knocked in a run with a base hit in the fifth inning. Non-roster player Buck Coats added an RBI double with two outs in the ninth.

Padres on the mound: Chris Young pitched four shutout frames before allowing three earned runs in his last inning. Woody Williams and Scott Linebrink combined for three innings of scoreless relief.

Cubs on the mound: Starter Sean Marshall retired the first two batters of the game, then gave up a single, a walk, a run-scoring double and Castilla's homer. He gave up six runs, all earned, on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Up next: The teams square off again Saturday at 2:05 p.m. CT at Cashman Field in Las Vegas. Las Vegas product Greg Maddux gets his final spring tuneup for Chicago, while the Padres counter with right-hander Dewon Brazelton.
