ST. LOUIS, Mo., July 2, 2015 - The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to tonight's series opener with the San Diego Padres that they have placed outfielder Jon Jay (left wrist stress reaction/bone bruise) on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 1, and have recalled left-handed pitcher Tim Cooney from Memphis (AAA). Cooney, who yesterday was named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team, is slated to make the start for St. Louis in tonight's game.
Cooney, 24, will be making his second Major League start tonight. He made his big league debut in a start
against the Philadelphia Phillies earlier this season (April 30), taking a no-decision in the Cardinals 9-3 win.
Cooney has compiled a 6-4 mark with a 2.74 ERA (88.2 IP/27 ER) in 14 starts for the triple-A Redbirds this season. The 6-3, 195-pound lefty leads the PCL in opposing batting average (.195) and walks+hits/innings pitched (0.87) and he's currently ranked 6th in ERA. The Collegeville, Pa. native has fanned 63 and walked just 16.
Jay, who is batting .223 with one homer and 10 RBI in 57 games, is going on the disabled list for the 2nd time this season. He had an earlier stint (May 14-28) on the 15-day D.L. with left wrist tendinitis.
