Mets No. 1 prospect Matz to make Major League debut against Reds
By Joey Nowak
There's nothing like a summer afternoon of baseball games, and that's what we've got coming on Sunday. Here are five things to watch for:
• Matz debuts: CIN @ NYM, after completion of Saturday's suspended game
Steven Matz, the Mets' top prospect -- and No. 54 overall in baseball -- is set to make his Major League debut against the Reds on Sunday at Citi Field. Matz leads the Pacific Coast League with seven wins, a 2.19 ERA and 94 strikeouts. He'll lend a hand to the Mets' six-man rotation. The completion of Saturday's suspended game will begin at 1:10 p.m. ET.
• A strange streak: LAD @ MIA, 1:10 p.m. ET
Dodgers righty Zack Greinke has been on a roll lately -- he hasn't allowed a run in his last two starts -- but doesn't have much to show for it. He hasn't received a winning decision since May 5. He'll be up against Marlins right-hander Jose Urena, who is 1-1 with a 3.57 ERA in three home starts.
• Masterson gets back: BOS @ TB, 1:10 p.m. ET
Red Sox right-hander Justin Masterson rejoins the Boston rotation after a six-week stint on the disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis. He'll fill Joe Kelly's spot and look to take down Chris Archer and the Rays. In eight career starts against the Red Sox, Archer is 1-5 with a 5.18 ERA.
• Chi Chi hits the road: TEX @ TOR, 1:07 p.m. ET
Rangers rookie Chi Chi Gonzalez had a rough go in his last outing -- surrendering six runs in 5 2/3 innings against the division-rival A's -- but has a good chance to rebound against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. Gonzalez has made two road starts this year (1-1) and owns a 0.56 ERA in those outings, having held right-handed hitters to a .145 average.
• Aces wild: CWS @ DET, 1:08 p.m. ET
A rivalry showdown between the White Sox and Tigers pits two of the league's best pitchers in Jeff Samardzija and David Price against each other. The first inning has been the worst for Samardzija, who has allowed 19 of his 52 runs in the first this year. Meanwhile, Price is 3-0 with a 1.21 ERA in four starts this month. That includes a complete-game five-hitter with 11 strikeouts against the White Sox on June 6.
