The Friars endured a heartbreaking 13-8 loss against the Giants during Thursday afternoon's series finale. Although they were unable to leave AT&T Park with a victory, they did go down swinging with a rally that plated eight runs in two innings in a true testament to the team's efforts in never giving up. Of those eight runs, six were scored in the eighth inning, when the Padres sent 11 batters to the plate and pounded out seven hits off of three Giants pitchers. San Diego had been trailing, 7-0, at one point in the game, and was down, 9-2, just prior to the team's offensive eruption. Unfortunately, the Padres' bullpen wasn't able to keep it close and surrendered a handful of runs.
James Shields had an uncharacteristic outing, surrendering seven earned runs on nine hits in four innings. San Diego had only collected three hits without any run production prior to the seventh inning. Matt Kemp highlighted the Padres' eighth-inning rally with a two-run home run into center field while Yangervis Solarte went 2-for-2 with an RBI in that frame. Alexi Amarista also enjoyed a multihit game, while the team got RBI production from Clint Barmes, Brett Wallace and Will Middlebrooks.
