ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays only have one member of their original five-man rotation healthy, but they are closing in on adding another to the fold.

Right-hander Jake Odorizzi threw 40 pitches in a bullpen session Monday and said the plan is for him to return to the Rays' rotation in two weeks.

"Everything felt good," said Odorizzi, who is on the disabled list for a left oblique strain. "I was a little rusty at first from not being on the mound, but I got the mechanical issues sorted out about 10-15 pitches in, and it was all good after that."

Odorizzi will throw another bullpen session on Wednesday after a day off, and will progress to live batting practice on Saturday before venturing on a rehab assignment.

"There's going to be a buildup process," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "I'm not going to sit here and say it's going to be a five-rehab-start buildup, but he's going to have to build back up. He's taken multiple weeks off now of really throwing with high intensity."

Worth noting

• Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez played catch Monday after leaving his start Saturday with a strained right groin. He will throw a bullpen session Tuesday that could determine whether he makes his scheduled start Friday against the Red Sox.

• Left-hander Drew Smyly (torn labrum) threw long toss from as much as 105 feet.

• Right-hander Andrew Bellatti (right shoulder tightness) also threw a bullpen session.

• First baseman James Loney (fractured left middle finger) fielded grounders and will take dry swings this week. Infielder Tim Beckham (strained right hamstring) began his rehab assignment Monday playing DH at Class A Advanced Charlotte, where recently signed outfielder Grady Sizemore also was scheduled to play.
