Gyorko hits homer in El Paso win

Needy gets 6th win as Chihuahuas back to .500

Second baseman Jedd Gyorko was 3-for-4 with his second homer and Santana High grad James Needy picked up his sixth win Friday night as Triple-A El Paso got back to .500 at 34-34.

Gyorko had two RBIs and two runs scored in the Chihuahuas 5-2 win over Salt Lake at El Paso. He is now hitting .250 (8-for-32) with the two homers and five RBIs in eight games since being optioned by the Padres to El Paso.

The right-handed Needy (6-3, 6.75 earned run average) allowed a run on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts over five innings.

Right-hander Leonel Campos (4.15 ERA) allowed a run on two hits with four strikeouts over two innings. Right-hander Kevin Quackenbush (0.77 ERA) allowed a hit with a strikeout in a scoreless inning. Right-hander Marcos Mateo (1.86 ERA) also allowed a hit with a strikeout in a scoreless inning to get his ninth save.

Third baseman Mike McCoy (.224) was 2-for-2 with a double, a walk and a run scored. Right fielder Rymer Liriano (.281) was 1-for-3 with a RBI. He was also hit by a pitch.

The Chihuahuas are back to .500 for the first time since June 2.

In other news regarding El Paso Friday, the Chihuahuas lost third baseman Brett Wallace to the Major League Padres while right-handed reliever Cory Mazzoni was optioned back to El Paso.

DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (29-37): Midland 4, MISSIONS 1 -- Starting RHP Bryan Rodriguez (3.99 ERA) allowed a run on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts in six innings. RHP Adam Cimber (2-2, 4.22 ERA) allowed three runs on six hits with three strikeouts in two innings to suffer the loss. CF Travis Jankowski (.329) was 1-for-3 with a walk.

HIGH SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (29-39): STORM 6, Lancaster 4 - LHP Cory Luebke allowed a run on a hit in an inning in his third rehab appearance this week. RHP Matt Shepherd (2-4, 6.00 ERA) allowed two runs on six hits and two walks with a strikeout in five innings. RHP Jordan Hershiser (4.50 ERA) allowed a walk with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 hitless innings to record his first save. LF Kyle Gaedele (.230) hit his seventh homer with three walks. 2B Fernando Perez (.255) was 2-for-4 with a run scored. RF Donavan Tate (.244) was 1-for-2 with two walks, a stolen base, a RBI and a run scored. 1B Marcus Davis (.274) was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored.    

LOW SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (30-36): TIN CAPS 5, Bowling Green 2 - Starting RHP Michael Kelly (3-1, 5.48 ERA) allowed two runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts in five innings. LHP Kyle McGrath (3.31 ERA) struck out two in two perfect innings. RHP Colby Blueberg (1.19 ERA) allowed two hits in a scoreless inning to record his eighth save. SS Ruddy Giron (.379) was 2-for-3 with a walk, a RBI and a run scored. LF Franchy cordero (.231) was 2-for-3 with a run scored. CF Michael Gettys (.223) was 2-for-5 with a double, a steal and a RBI.

SHORT-SEASON SINGLE-A TRI CITY (1-1): Dust Devils 8, BOISE 2 - 3B Carlos Belen (.500) was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. CF Rod Boykin (.250) was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, a walk, a steal, a RBI and three runs scored. C Austin Allen (.250) was 1-for-4 with a walk, a RBI and two runs scored. RHP Jose Castillo allowed two runs on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings. LHP Taylor Cox struck out two in a perfect inning to get the save.       

DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE PADRES (9-9): BLUE JAYS 6, Padres 3 - RF Aurilio Perez (.261) was 2-for-4 with a run scored. PH Jaffe Garcia (.333) was 1-for-1 with a run scored. Starting RHP Pedro Beltran (0-2, 4.76 ERA) allowed a run on a hit and four walks with two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. RHP Jonathan Guzman (2.45 ERA) allowed an unearned run on a hit and a walk with two strikeouts in two innings.
