"Dustin's got a little bit of soreness again today," said manager John Farrell. "We're dealing with a day-to-day situation. He felt good yesterday coming in, but it feels like it's to the point where it affects his ability to hit against a firm front side. As a result, we need to give him a little time."
Brock Holt made the start at second base and in the leadoff spot.
At this point, the Red Sox don't expect that Pedroia will have to go on the disabled list.
"We're not at a DL point with this," Farrell said. "All the information that we've had after the exams taken is that it's not structural. There's some inflammation in there, so we're trying to get that out as soon as possible."
