NEW YORK -- With catcher J.T. Realmuto limited by back tightness, the Marlins on Thursday made a couple of moves to add catching depth. The club announced third baseman Martin Prado has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder sprain, and catcher Jhonatan Solano had his contract selected from Triple-A New Orleans.
Prado, who injured his shoulder on Sunday, didn't make the trip to New York as his shoulder was being treated in South Florida. His disabled list stint is retroactive to Monday.
With Prado and Realmuto unavailable in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Yankees, Miami had a short bench. Bringing up Solano protects the team behind the plate.
The Marlins remain hopeful that with another day or two of rest, Realmuto will be fine. There is an outside chance the rookie catcher could be ready Friday, when Miami opens a three-game set at Cincinnati.
Realmuto initially was in the lineup on Wednesday, but he was scratched and replaced by Jeff Mathis.
With Prado's injury, the Marlins were planning on selecting the contract of outfielder/infielder Jordany Valdespin, who was replaced after three at-bats for New Orleans on Wednesday. Valdespin was actually at Yankee Stadium on Thursday in case he was activated.
"We had Valdespin ready to go with Prado going on the DL," manager Dan Jennings said. "With J.T. and the tightness in his back, we felt like, give him another day, at least."
But concern over Realmuto's back changed plans and created the need for catching depth.
Prado, a mainstay at third base, is batting .272 with four home runs and 24 RBIs in 63 games. Derek Dietrich and Donovan Solano are options to play third base.
"We're hoping it's only the 15 days," Jennings said of Prado. "We knew there was going to be soreness the first five or six days. Going to Cincinnati, we didn't want to be short there."
The Marlins have scheduled Jarred Cosart (vertigo) to make a rehab assignment start for Double-A Jacksonville on Sunday at Chattanooga. Also that day, Jose Fernandez (Tommy John surgery) will make a rehab assignment start for Class A Advanced Jupiter.
