Gonzalez agrees; paperwork not done

BOSTON -- While he has not been formally introduced, Alex Gonzalez has agreed to a one-year contract with the Red Sox.

The Associated Press reported Friday night that a baseball official, requesting anonymity, said the one-year, $3 million deal was done. If Gonzalez is waived before March 15, he would receive one-sixth of the contract, or approximately $500,000.

The team has yet to make the formal announcement since the contract papers have not been filed with the Commissioner's Office. That announcement is expected sometime next week.

The slick-fielding Gonzalez, who made the 1999 National League All-Star squad, will turn 29 on Feb. 15 and is a career .245 batter. He played his first eight Major League seasons with Florida.
