Cubs close in All-Star vote but need help

DETROIT -- Kris Bryant was second, Miguel Montero third, and Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro fourth at their respective positions in the latest 2015 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot, released on Tuesday.

Bryant, the National League Rookie of the Month for May, has received 1,513,913 votes in the balloting for third basemen and trails the Cardinals' Matt Carpenter, who has more than 3 million.

Arizona's Paul Goldschmidt has taken the lead in the field of first basemen with more than 2 million votes, and he is followed by the Dodgers' Adrian Gonzalez and the Cardinals' Matt Adams.

Goldschmidt was elected a starter by the fans in 2014 and has received 2,010,049 total votes en route to surpassing Gonzalez, who has 1,882,725. Rizzo, who brought a 12-game hitting streak into Tuesday's series opener with the Tigers, has received 1,149,133 votes.

A two-time All-Star, Montero, who ranks fifth in slugging among catchers, was third in the latest balloting behind the Cardinals' Yadier Molina and the Giants' Buster Posey. Dexter Fowler, who has never been named to an All-Star team, was 12th among outfielders.

Castro, a three-time All-Star, was fourth among shortstops behind the Cardinals' Jhonny Peralta, the Giants' Brandon Crawford and the Rockies' Troy Tulowitzki.

The 86th All-Star Game will be played on July 14 at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.

Fans can cast their votes for starters at MLB.com and all 30 club sites -- on their computers, tablets and smartphones -- using the 2015 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot until Thursday, July 2, at 10:59 p.m. CT. For the first time, voting is exclusively online, where fans may submit up to 35 ballots.
