Tanaka's return, doubleheader at Fenway highlight MLB schedule
By Joey Nowak
Wednesday features a full day of games from afternoon until night, with one doubleheader in the mix. Here are a few things to watch for:
• The 'K' in Kluber: CLE @ KC, 8:10 p.m. ET
Reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber has found his groove. Over his last four starts, he's posted a 1.41 ERA to go with 50 strikeouts and only two walks in 32 innings. His counterpart, Jason Vargas, will make his second start since coming off the DL with a flexor strain and is expected to stretch out to 90 pitches.
• Is six a crowd? NYM @ SD, 9:10 p.m. ET
The Mets are ready to implement a six-man rotation, with Dillon Gee set to return to the rotation for his first start since May 3, as Noah Syndergaard will remain in the Majors. Gee will have the unenviable task of facing James Shields, who has allowed three earned runs or fewer in nine of his 11 starts.
• Hot Haren: CHC @ MIA, 7:10 p.m. ET
Marins right-hander Dan Haren has turned into the staff's hottest starter, scattering just four earned runs over his last 21 innings (1.71 ERA). He's 2-0 with a 1.45 ERA at Marlins Park this season, and he'll face Jon Lester and the Cubs on Wednesday. Lester posted double-digit strikeouts for the second time this season in his last outing against the Nationals.
