Burns setting the table atop A's lineup

Vogt delivers clutch RBIs after leadoff hitter makes things happen on basepaths

Burns setting the table atop A's lineup

OAKLAND -- Billy Burns and Stephen Vogt sparked the A's to a 3-0 win over the Yankees at the Coliseum on Sunday, accounting for all of the A's runs in the series finale.

Vogt's two-run blast to right in the sixth plated Burns, who blooped a single to right and stole second and third. Burns was encouraged to steal second, but he stole third on his own off Yankees starter Adam Warren.

"It's been amazing what [Burns] has done at the top of the order," Vogt said. "It's just been huge. The havoc that he causes on the basepaths, what a lot of people don't realize is he affects the pitches being pitched to us while he's on base, because they're worried about him."

Vogt's two-run homer

Vogt capitalized on Burns' baserunning, launching his 11th home run. He has reached safely in all 25 of the A's home games, and has already set a career high with 38 RBIs.

Vogt is riding a seven-game hitting streak (10-for-25, .400) and is batting .342 in Oakland. While the A's lineup has had its struggles this season, Vogt has been a constant.

"Not only production and homers, but big hits," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "That's really the big package when you're talking about what Stephen Vogt is doing for you."

Vogt's sac fly

Burns, who has a six-game hitting streak, has emerged as a reliable leadoff hitter for the A's. He slapped the game's very first pitch to left for a hit, and added two more hits and two runs. Vogt plated Burns in the eighth on a sacrifice fly.

The A's won their first home series of the season and have now won 16 of 23 against the Yankees.

Melvin on 3-0 win over Yankees

"I think it's huge any time you win a series." Burns said, "and against the Yankees, it's even more special, especially for me, my first time playing against the Yankees."
