MINNEAPOLIS -- Maicer Izturis has a tear in his right shoulder and will be sent for a second opinion before the Blue Jays can determine the extent of the injury.

Izturis sustained the tear while on a rehab assignment with Class A Dunedin. He felt something pop while attempting a diving play during a game on May 23. A timetable for his return is currently unknown.

The injury is yet another setback for a player who has suffered through more than his fair share of ailments over the past two years. Izturis appeared in just 11 games last season because of a torn ligament in his left knee.

Izturis returned this spring and appeared to have the inside track on the starting job at second base until he strained his groin during a Grapefruit League game against the Rays. He was on a rehab assignment for that injury until there was a tear in his shoulder.

The 34-year-old Izturis is a career .269 hitter with a .331 on-base percentage over the course of 11 years in the big leagues. Since signing a three-year contract prior to the 2013 season, Izturis has appeared in just 118 games for the Blue Jays.
