Marlins claim reliever Smith from Angels

NEW YORK -- The Marlins added some bullpen depth to their system on Friday, claiming right-hander Chad Smith off waivers from the Angels. The 25-year-old, who has appeared in 12 big league games, was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans.

Miami becomes Smith's third franchise this season. He started off with the A's, and made two appearances with Oakland, before being picked up by the Angels.

In 20 Minor League innings this season with two organizations, Smith is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA. He appeared in eight games at Triple-A Nashville and six more with Triple-A Salt Lake.

The Marlins are seeking organizational depth with big league experience.

Recently, Miami promoted relievers Carter Capps and Vin Mazzaro. The organization also lost Nick Masset, who signed with the Braves.

At Triple-A, right-hander Ryan Chaffee is out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. And right-hander Preston Claiborne is unable to throw for about another month with a right shoulder injury.
