ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays announced on Wednesday that right-handed pitcher Grant Balfour was granted his release from his Minor League contract, ending his stint with Triple-A Durham.
Balfour was designated for assignment on April 19 after making six appearances for the Rays, allowing three runs in 4 1/3 innings, but re-signed with the club on May 1. In eight appearances for the Bulls, he posted a 2.79 ERA in 9 2/3 innings.
"The agreement that he came up with after he left here, it was all agreed upon," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "I think they set the date and Grant was very much on board with the decision -- it was actually his. We love the fact that he went down there and tried to work on some stuff.
"[We're] not sure what he is going to do, but it still goes back to the career he had here as a Ray. He participated in a ton of special moments and was a big part of some really good team success."
