DETROIT -- The Rangers placed pitcher Dustin Nippert on the disabled list Tuesday and recalled Doug Mathis from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Nippert, pitching for the first time in 10 days, was hit on the right side of his head by an Austin Jackson line drive in the sixth inning of Monday's game against the Tigers. The ball ricocheted high over third baseman Michael Young's head and into left field while Nippert, who stands 6-foot-8, went sprawling to the ground.
The right-hander was taken to a local hospital and X-rays and other tests showed no fractures or other serious damage. But the Rangers decided to put him on the disabled list because he is going to be down for several days. Mathis is 1-1 with a 6.98 ERA in 10 relief appearances for the Rangers this season and was 4-4 with a 4.68 ERA in 11 games at Oklahoma City.
