Already this season Jones has set a National League record by recording saves in 21 straight appearances. The Major League mark is 24 set by John Wetteland with the Yankees in 1996.
While Jones has logged 25 consecutive saves, he collected 12 of them in August.
Signed as a free agent with the Marlins last December, Jones anticipated being a setup reliever to projected closer Guillermo Mota. But when Mota went on the disabled list with an elbow problem in early May, Jones stepped in and has been one of the most impressive closers in the league.
August was a prime example of how effective the right-hander was, posting an 0.66 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings. He didn't allow a walk.
The DHL award recognizes the most outstanding reliever each month. The officially-sanctioned Major League Baseball award is part of a sponsorship agreement between Major League Baseball, Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM) and DHL, the world's leading express delivery and logistics company, which makes DHL the "Official Express Delivery and Logistics Provider" of both organizations.
In his 13-year career, Jones has topped the 30-saves mark four times. His 1.15 ERA also is the best of all Major League relievers.
For his monthly honor, DHL will donate $1,500 to a local chapter of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the official charity of Major League Baseball, in Jones' name. In addition, Jones will be recognized in a special advertisement appearing tomorrow, September 8, in USA Today.
The "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award" winner is selected by a special Major League Baseball "yellow-ribbon" panel that includes Hall of Fame pitcher Dennis Eckersley; Darryl Hamilton, former Major League outfielder and MLB Radio host; Jerome Holtzman, the official MLB historian and a member of the writer's wing of the Hall of Fame; Rick Sutcliffe, 1984 NL Cy Young Award winner, ESPN and MLB International broadcaster; and Bob Watson, vice president, on-field operations, Major League Baseball.
At the conclusion of the season, Major League Baseball fans will have the opportunity vote the "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Year Award." The voting will take place on MLB.com.
