Boston's Ortiz Disciplined

Red Sox DH Receives One-Game Suspension

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz has received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for making contact with Umpire John Tumpane during the bottom of the fifth inning of the Club's Sunday, April 19th game against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park. Joe Garagiola, Jr., Senior Vice President of Standards & On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement.

Ortiz's suspension had been scheduled to begin tonight, when the Red Sox are to begin a road series against the Tampa Bay Rays. However, he has elected to file an appeal. Thus, his suspension will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.
